Letters of the Rives family [manuscript], 1832-1882.

Letters are chiefly by William Cabell Rives, Judith Page Walker Rives, William Cabell Rives, Jr., and Amelie Louise Rives Sigourney. Correspondents include Francis Robert, Alfred Landon and Ella Rives, John Reuben Thompson, and Fitzedward Hall. Topics include family news from "Castle Hill," business affairs in Cobham, and the publication of William Cabell Rives' "History of the life and times of James Madison." Civil War news conveyed includes mention of an advance by Burnside, William S. Rosecrans and the battle of Murfreesboro, the Union expedition against Wilmington, N.C., a federal naval defeat at Galveston, the exploits of the "Alabama," and the taking of a family friend, Eugene Davis, as a prisoner-of-war. Reconstruction letters discuss a "free negro settlement" in Cobham, and the disenfranchisement of whites and granting of suffrage to blacks. Several letters describe William Cabell Rives, Jr.'s voyage to England in 1860 on the S.S. Arabic, his travels in London, a speech in the Commons by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and impressions of members of the Royal family whom he met. Also of interest are an 1861 letter from John Reuben Thompson, Richmond, about the current state of public affairs and the question of secession; and a letter, 1861, from Fitzedward Hall about life in Sangur, India, as an employee of the East India Company, and Inspector of Schools of Central India.
